Severe adult acne involves body chemistry and is beyond individual control, although it can be managed with the guidance of a knowledgeable doctor. People with mild cases of acne, perhaps a few pimples don’t necessarily need to visit a dermatologist, but it is essential to get treatment for serious adult acne.

Aggressive treatment at the beginning of a severe acne cycle is the best way to contain acne and prevent serious scarring.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN

Although acne attacks men and women equally, men tend to have more severe cases because of the androgen factor. Men produce more androgen, and when the androgen is overstimulated, it can create the kind of acne that leaves deep scars.  It starts early in a young man’s life. The cellular and protein makeup of skin of color makes it extremely sensitive. An adolescent, young or middle-aged man who has a severe acne breakout is at the risk of developing serious scars.

HORMONES AND FEMALE ADULT ACNE

Being female didn’t protect you from raging androgens and when you were a teenager, and your gender will not protect you as you mature.

Women naturally produce androgen in their ovaries and adrenal glands. if your body makes a lot of androgens, you are likely to break out. Your female hormones, the estrogens can help you. Your menstrual cycle causes changes in your estrogen and progesterone levels. Adult acne sometimes gets better when you have your period, but it is more likely to get worse because the hormone levels are changing.

Estrogen can be helpful, and your doctor may prescribe it, in the form of a birth control pill, to counter the androgens.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy also have an effect. If you are pregnant and you’ve always had clear skin, you may begin to break out. Or if you’ve struggled with acne for years, you may find that your skin clears up during pregnancy. The extra estrogen and progesterone you are producing create the swing.
